Wu Lou in the Workplace: Desk and Office Placement Guide
Exactly where to place a Wu Lou on your desk and around the office — matched to the actual energy flow of a work environment, not generic bedroom rules.
Last updated: August 2, 2026 · 6 min readThe Core Rule: Wu Lou Desk Placement by Energy Flow
The workplace operates on a different energy model than the home. In a bedroom, Wu Lou placement follows health and family sectors. In an office, it follows the energy flow of work — the path that career qi takes as it moves through your desk environment. The single governing rule for desk Wu Lou placement is this: the Wu Lou must be in the path of incoming energy, with its opening facing the person it protects.
In a standard desk setup, the primary energy stream enters from the door, moves across the desk surface, and exits through the window or opposite wall. Your Wu Lou desk placement should intercept this flow — not block it, but absorb what passes through. The gourd opening receives energy, processes it through the Wu Lou's absorptive structure, and releases purified qi back into the space.
Primary desk Wu Lou placement: Far left corner of your desk — the corner most distant from the door when you are seated. The left side of the desk is the health and family sector in classical feng shui, and for desk placement it also corresponds to the incoming career qi stream in a standard office layout.
Where on the Desk — Three Specific Positions
Not all desk positions serve the Wu Lou equally. These three positions are the only places on a standard desk where a Wu Lou can function as intended:
✅ Left side of monitor
The highest-conversion desk position for a Wu Lou. Sits in the primary view, intercepts the main energy stream that flows from door to desk, and faces the user naturally. Best for dedicated desk Wu Lou placement when only one gourd is used.
✅ Far left corner, desk edge
Correct for classical feng shui sector placement. Catches peripheral energy flow without obstructing the primary work surface. Good for smaller desks where monitor placement takes the center-left position. The corner creates a slight concentration of energy before the gourd absorbs it.
✅ Above desk level, left wall shelf
For wall-mounted or shelf-mounted Wu Lou above desk level. Eye level or slightly above on the left side of the room when seated. Must be at or above desk height — never below desk level. The elevated position allows the gourd to process energy from above as it flows down across the desk.
❌ Center of desk
Blocks the user's own career qi at the center of the space — the exact point where personal energy and work energy should remain clear. Places the Wu Lou in isolation rather than in the energy stream. Creates stagnation rather than absorption.
Wu Lou in an Open Plan Office
Open plan offices have a specific energy flow pattern that differs from private rooms: the main energy stream runs along the central walkway, between workstations, and is redirected by partitions, furniture rows, and the office entrance. A Wu Lou placed without accounting for this pattern will sit in dead air rather than active flow.
For open plan Wu Lou desk placement, position your gourd at the corner of your desk that faces the main office entrance or the primary walkway. In a row of desks, the leftmost corner of each desk — relative to each person seated — catches the energy that moves between workstations. If your desk is against a wall, place the Wu Lou at the far left corner of the desk surface, not against the wall directly, as the wall blocks energy flow from that direction.
Wu Lou in a Shared Office or Team Room
When the office is shared by a small team (two to six people), the Wu Lou placement strategy changes from individual desk placement to shared space protection. A single large Wu Lou at the main entrance of the shared office intercepts energy for everyone in the room — this is more effective than individual small gourds scattered across desks, because it treats the shared space as one energetic unit.
For a shared office entrance placement, place a larger Wu Lou on a shelf, side table, or cabinet near the door — on the left side as you enter, at eye level or above. This protects the entire room from incoming negative energy and purifies the shared qi that everyone in the space breathes throughout the day.
Wu Lou Orientation on a Desk — Does It Matter?
Yes — and this is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of desk Wu Lou placement. The Wu Lou opening must face the person it is protecting. The opening is the receiver; the body of the gourd is the processor. If the opening faces a wall, a window, or empty space behind the desk, the Wu Lou has nothing to receive and cannot complete its absorptive function.
For desk-mounted Wu Lou placement, the gourd should be positioned so that when you sit normally, the opening faces your torso — not your face directly, but your general direction. Slightly angled toward you is correct. The gourd body can face outward toward the room. Do not place the Wu Lou with its back to you — this reverses the function and the gourd will attempt to push energy toward you rather than draw it through and absorb it.
The floor rule: Never place a Wu Lou on the floor of an office. The gourd needs to be at desk level or above. Floor placement puts the Wu Lou below the qi stream that flows at human height through a workspace — it will not intercept or absorb effectively from floor level.
Wu Lou Desk Placement Mistakes to Avoid
These five placement errors are responsible for most desk Wu Lou failures in workplace settings:
1. Placing the Wu Lou behind your back. The area directly behind your seat when you work is the support position — it should be clear. A Wu Lou behind you with nothing in front of it to protect has no energy to process. The gourd must face the energy source, not your back.
2. Using the Wu Lou as a paperweight in the center of the desk. The desk center is where your career qi and work focus are centered. Placing anything heavy and absorptive here dampens your own professional energy. The Wu Lou belongs at the periphery of the desk, where it can intercept energy without disturbing your personal career field.
3. Clustering multiple Wu Lou gourds together on one desk. One correctly placed Wu Lou is more effective than three poorly placed ones. Redundant placement does not amplify the protection — it creates competing absorption points that can interfere with each other's function. If you want more absorption capacity, use one larger Wu Lou, not several small ones.
4. Placing the Wu Lou near a window with a negative view. A window overlooking a parking lot, busy road, or T-junction channelizes sharp sha energy directly into the office. The Wu Lou placed near such a window will spend all its capacity absorbing external negative energy rather than processing the general desk environment. If your desk is near such a window, place the Wu Lou between you and the window — not on the far side of the desk from you.
5. Keeping the Wu Lou in its box or a display case. An enclosed or covered Wu Lou cannot receive or release energy. The gourd must be open to the air, with its neck unobstructed. Display cases and boxes are for decorative objects — the Wu Lou is a functional feng shui tool and must be able to breathe.
The Right Wu Lou for Your Desk
For desk Wu Lou placement, two qualities matter: material and activation. A solid brass Wu Lou provides the gourd's full structural energy absorption regardless of whether you can see through it — the brass itself has the property of drawing in and containing negative energy. A Kai Guang consecrated brass Wu Lou adds the Taoist energetic layer — directing the absorption specifically toward health protection and the removal of career obstacles, which is precisely what a desk Wu Lou needs to do.
